The answer

I quote from Sarajevo Film Festival Film by Johan van der Keuken often when people ask me why I feel that art is important. I think the answer lies with these people, in Sarajevo during the bombings, and their need for film. 

'You can be without the things you like, like strawberries or ice cream or good cigarettes or fine wines. The food and the medicines are not the only needs we have. But there is a certain number of things you cannot live without and still be alive. And among them is film. It is the way of dealing with the world, and it’s magic. And people cannot live without magic.'
